EU regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is an EU regulation (EC 1907/2006) that requires companies to register chemicals used in products placed on the EU market. Importers and manufacturers must ensure substances of very high concern (SVHCs) are identified and communicated through the supply chain. REACH applies to nearly all products sold in the EU, including electronics, textiles, toys, and furniture.

Examples

  • A seller importing electronics to the EU must ensure their products comply with REACH and do not contain restricted substances above permitted limits.
  • REACH requires importers to register any chemical substance imported in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
  • The REACH SVHC candidate list is updated twice yearly; sellers must monitor their products for newly added substances.
