Global Trade Item Number — an international product identifier (UPC, EAN, ISBN).
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is an internationally standardized product identifier used to uniquely identify products in the global supply chain. GTINs include UPC (12 digits, North America), EAN (13 digits, Europe/global), ISBN (books), and JAN (Japan). Amazon and other marketplaces require GTINs for product listing, and invalid or duplicate GTINs can result in listing rejection.
Examples
- • A seller listing a new product on Amazon US must provide a valid UPC (12-digit GTIN) from GS1 or an approved provider.
- • Amazon requires GTINs for most product categories; sellers can apply for GTIN exemption for private-label or handmade products.
- • A product's EAN barcode (13-digit GTIN) is used in EU markets and is typically printed on the product packaging.
