Harmonized System Code — an international standard for classifying traded goods.
The Harmonized System (HS) code is an internationally standardized numerical system for classifying traded products, maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO). HS codes typically consist of 6 digits globally, with countries adding additional digits for more specific classification (e.g., 10 digits in the US HTS system). Correct HS code classification determines applicable duty rates, trade agreement eligibility, and import/export controls.

- • A seller importing wireless Bluetooth headphones from China must classify them under HS code 8518.30 (headphones) to determine the correct US duty rate.
- • Misclassifying a product under the wrong HS code can result in overpayment of duties or customs penalties and shipment delays.
