Tax ID

Category: registration

A general term for government-issued identification numbers used for tax purposes.

A Tax Identification Number (TIN or Tax ID) is a unique identifier assigned by a government tax authority to a taxpayer (individual or business). Different countries use different formats: SSN/EIN in the US, UTR in the UK, ABN in Australia, and GSTIN in India. Cross-border sellers need tax IDs for registration with tax authorities, customs clearance, and marketplace compliance.

Examples

  • A US seller needs an EIN (Employer Identification Number) as their Tax ID to register for sales tax in individual states.
  • Non-US sellers applying to sell on Amazon US may need to provide a Tax ID from their home country plus a US EIN or ITIN.
  • Tax IDs are required on customs declarations to identify the importer of record and ensure proper duty and tax assessment.
