UKCA Marking Enforcement (2023)
UK authorities seized imported electronics still bearing only CE marks after the UKCA transition deadline.
What Happened
Following the UK's post-Brexit transition from CE marking to the UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) mark, UK Trading Standards and OPSS (Office for Product Safety and Standards) began enforcement against products bearing only CE marks. Cross-border sellers using Amazon UK FBA saw listings suspended for electrical products that lacked UKCA declarations of conformity. HMRC border checks also intercepted shipments with non-compliant markings.

Sellers continued importing CE-marked products without obtaining separate UKCA certification as required after Brexit transition periods ended.
Resolution
- 1Engage a UK-approved conformity assessment body to test products

- 4Update Amazon UK listings with UKCA compliance documentation
- 5Reapply for listing reactivation with evidence of compliance

Lessons Learned
- •UKCA is NOT interchangeable with CE marking for products placed on the GB market
- •Northern Ireland has separate rules (CE mark may still be accepted under Windsor Framework)
- •Amazon UK actively monitors UKCA declarations and delists non-compliant products
- •UK Approved Bodies have limited capacity - early engagement avoids certification bottlenecks
Prevention
- ✓Begin UKCA certification process at least 3 months before product launch in UK
- ✓Maintain separate UKCA and CE technical documentation files
- ✓Set up alerts for UK OPSS enforcement actions and guidance updates
- ✓Consider using a UK-based Authorised Representative for non-UK manufacturers
